Music For Memory

On June 2, 2019, Where Music Carries Us collaborated with a project called “Music for Memory,” and held their second event at the Artis Senior Living Center of Princeton Junction. There were about 13 performers with ages ranging from 12 to 17 years old. The performance consisted of instrumental solos, trios, and a vocalist. This outreach concert, for patients with Alzheimer’s, targeted the goal of the Music for Memory project: to bring music to as many people with dementia as possible, and developing a rapport between our communities and the elderly. Music offers many benefits to Alzheimer patients and improves their memory. The event was not only part of a great cause, but provided students with the chance to display the pieces that they have worked so hard on. Everyone presented themselves in such a fine manner. Our organization enjoyed working with this project, performing, and connecting with the elderly!

This event increased the exposure of WMCU’s mission: spreading music to the communities around us.

Here is Anny Shi’s firsthand account of her experience:

Joyce Zhu (on flute), Jackie Qin (on bassoon), and I (Anny Shi, on flute) played The London Trio by Joseph Haydn. Personally, playing in a trio was a great learning experience! We had about four rehearsals where we worked on intonation, counting, and dynamics. Preparing for this event not only enabled me to work with other talented musicians, but also furthered my skills as an instrumentalist. It was heartwarming to see the joy that was expressed by the senior citizens who attended the performance. Furthermore, watching and supporting each others’ performances was truly inspiring and uplifting. We had so much fun sharing our music and interacting with the friendly audience. The event was a great way to embrace our musicianship! Special thanks to Amy Tu (Artistic Director of WMCU) for organizing this event and Music for Memory for providing us with this wonderful opportunity! Another huge thank you to everyone who participated: Andy, Thomas, Bolin, Amy, Joyce, Alice, Audrey, Amanda, Sanjana, Jackie, Sriya, Yvonne, Iris, and Anny (myself). This event was amazing!
